The Bank of North America

In 1781 the first “real” bank chartered by Congress was formed. They were authorized to issue paper bank notes. The Bank of North America had a total of eight branches with its main office in Philadelphia. It provided financial support during the Revolution, the War of 1812 and the Civil War.
