Greenbacks

Demand notes were the first legal tender issued in 1861. During this time Congress was beleaguered by the Civil War and on the edge of bankruptcy. These demand notes were passed by Congress and were payable by the Assistant Treasurer of the U.S. They were commonly called greenbacks due to their green tint that helped to prevent counterfeiting.
